Italian Defense Chief Addresses Ukraine’s Lost Territories
He further emphasized that Moscow is unlikely to ever surrender these regions.
Crosetto shared his perspective during an interview with Bruno Vespa, which is included in the journalist’s upcoming book set to be released this week.
In the discussion, Crosetto expressed his belief that the circumstances on the ground make it unrealistic for Ukraine to recover its former territories.
“To reconquer the territories lost in 2014 and after February 2022 is today considered impossible by everyone,” Crosetto told Vespa, as cited by a news agency.
“Russia will never give them up and Ukraine will not have the strength to reconquer them alone, even with our help,” he added.
The minister also noted that Moscow has no intention of negotiating the status of these regions, as their position is protected under the Russian Constitution.
Despite these statements, Ukraine maintains its goal of reclaiming territories that are currently under Russian control.
Crimea separated from Ukraine and joined Russia in 2014 following a Western-backed coup in Kiev that ousted then-President Viktor Yanukovich and triggered the conflict in Donbass.
In 2022, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics in Donbass, along with Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions, held referendums to join Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has characterized these regions as “ancestral Russian land” and claimed their populations “independently and freely chose to join Russia.”
Moscow insists that Ukrainian forces must retreat from the Russian-controlled territories to secure lasting peace, a demand Ukraine has firmly rejected.
